The Cover Picture On My Book

The question I get asked most when signing my book at book signings is: "is that you in the picture on your book cover?" The answer is yes. That picture was taken in (1955) during a large three week, seven cities ten crusade in the San Gaberial Valley, California, while I was preaching. A news paper photographer brought the picture by the tent and ask me if I had any idea how I looked in the heat of preaching? I thanked him for the picture and filed it away for 54 years. My publisher asked for an action picture of earlier years and I went to the archives and there was the picture. So many have asked: "do you have any idea what you were preaching about that evening? Of course I don't remember the subject but I usually tell them "I was preaching Jesus." Some ask: "what type a preacher were you." "You Are Never Too Old"

At age 75- I went to Houston, TX. and joined up with the Texas Air Aces and piloted one of their high tech Air Force trainers with one of their Top Gun Aces and flw an hour and fifteen minute combat manuver mission in competition against a dear friend pulling up to 5 G's in high speed dives and turns while doing mock dog fights and.... At 80- I took the oath of office as a Chaplain with the Polk County Sheriff's Department and.... At 84- I wrote and published From Despair to Victory, memoirs of sixty years in the ministry and At 85- I went to Kenya and preached a Bible conference and traveled for one week preaching in churches through the bush.... And at 86- I am busy preaching in different church in my part of the country, Winter Haven, FL. While doing all this I am promoting my book From Despair to Victory which has been received well. Dr. Bates, it has been such a privilege for me to read your book, From Despair to Victory and share in the many wonderful life experiences as you have pastored and traveled around the world. I am an avid reader and can honestly report that From Despair to Victory is a great inspiriation to me. It is well written with humality and perseverance. Awesome Preaching Mission To Kenys, Africa

My soul is still basking in never to be forgotten memories of the preaching mission to Africa January 17 through Fenruary 3, 2010. Only eternity will tally the results and the effect of one week of preaching in the city of "ELDORET" Kenya, and another week traveling from village to village, ministering to some who had never seen a white man in person. The eagerness to hear the word of God will never be forgotten. Responses to the simple preaching of God's word was unbelievable. Returning to Africa was an answer to a 42 year prayer of mine. In 1967 I preached in another part of the continent for three weeks and the memories and the invitation from the plea of the people for me to please return soon never left my heart. God made it all possible through many friends. I owe deep thanks to my friend, Jim Durham, a lay-missionary who asked me to make the journey with him to do the preaching while he conducted business training for pastors who may wish to start a small business to supplement their meager to no income at all. To God be the glory! Getting reports from those who have read my book from Africa is more than rewarding. Pastors have asked me to return in 2011 to preach a crusade in one of their stadiums.
